FUENTES GEORGINAS….as its name implies, are thermo sources that eminate from the Zunil volcano and which flow into the place known today as FUENTES GEORGINAS.

These thermo sources were discovered by two laborers from Zunil in the year 1902 and they changed it into communal bath, where people who lived around there or nearby the place of the therme baths took a bath when they considered it necessary.

Following the year 1902, after having been discovered by the Municipality of Zunil, they maintained its upkeep for years afterward. But, as the municipalities at that time depended on their own resources, they could not maintain the upkeep of thermo sources, in as much as it did not represent a source of income, to them.

Later on, in the year 1932, the municipality of zunil considered that it could no longer maintain the upkeep of the thermo baths and made contact with the municipality of the city of Quetzaltenango, letting them know that if they had the necessary resources for the upkeep of the thermo baths, they would cede it to them. The municipal government of 1932 considered that they did have the resources for its upkeep and an agreement was made with the municipality of Quetzaltenango by means of a remittance. The thermo baths were transferred to the municipality of Quetzaltenango to a radius of one thousand meters. It was established that for such remittance, they would maintain the upkeep and some repairs for the tourist center. If not, the remission would be revoked and the municipality of Zunil would recuperate the thermo baths.

After the municipality of Quetzaltenango was already the owner of the thermo baths, at that time the revolutionary governments were on focus and when Jorge Ubico Ruled, openings were made, to serve as a road between the south coast and the thermo baths, could advance no further, in as much as there was a chain of volcanos, so the road could not continue. The people who were opening the way were slaves or those who were doing a jail sentence, worked on the road.

They immediately informed the said president, Jorge Ubico, that they found hot water in the location. Since there was already a road, President Ubico frequently visited Quetzaltenango, during his government, only to bathe in the thermo waters. He made caravans with his wife georgina, protected by his police.

During the revolutionary government, the thermo baths had the name of the Quetzaltenango baths. After the revolutionaries were defeated, the name FUENTES GEORGINAS was returned, in honor of the wife of President Jorge Ubico. That was because he and his wife nade the thermo baths their center for realization or constant vacation.

As the remittance of the municipality was completed, the turiscenter took shape, utilizing heavy equipment to remove obstacles and flattening out certain areas, to give better access to the tourist center.

Later in 1970 and 1972, the building of the bungalows began, which today function for those the want a more comfortable realization. One can sleep for two or more nights in order to enjoy the supreme benefit of the medicinal water. The bungalows were designed by a German Architect.

During the goverament of Alvaro Arzù and with the inducement of the mayor of the municipality ( of Zunil) during 1996-2000, Julio Cesar Xicay Paz and his government councils, presented a project to asphalt 8 kilometers with 300 meters, from the Interamerican highway to the thermo baths (Fuentes Georginas). It was further deliberated, approved and the road was paved. Following that, Guatemala was affected by the hurricane Mitch, which caused certain destruction to the recently built road. Such a situation was compounded by the recently paved road, but it was a natural disaster that created the damage. This was taken into consideration and the road was repaired. The tourist center was also affected by the reconstruction, due to its monthly payments.

Again Guatemala was affected by ( the tropical storm) Stan, which provoked serious damages in the tourist center; burying swimming pools, destroying bungalows and parts of the accessible road. Thus, those who were in charge, immediately undertook the project of rebuilding the tourist center… that is; their bungalows, restaurant and swimming pools. They also had to clear the eight kilometers from landslides on the road which led to the tourist center. Due to all this hard work and sacrifice today Las Fuente Georginas is a wonderful as it ever has been.
